Musicians at the Olney Theatre in Maryland recently signed their first union contract with the 78-year-old theater. As musical productions became increasingly popular at Olney, musicians felt they were being left out of the decision-making process. Last year they organized to fight for the respect they deserve, and in July the musicians overwhelmingly voted to be represented by AFM Local 161-710.
The Olney contract ensures steady wage increases for musicians over the next 3½ years. The contract also includes an increase in pension contributions, a designated representative to discuss issues with management, and formalized working conditions.
