$50 million for National Endowment for the Arts Included in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act
AFM, and its allies, secured $50 million in funding for the National Endowment for the Arts in the economic stimulus package. This package was passed by both the House (246 votes in favor and 183 votes against) and Senate (60 votes for and 38 votes against) on Friday, February 13 and will be signed into law by the President.
This is a major victory for the arts community. The arts sector has suffered greatly during the economic downturn and this money will bring much needed relief to the U.S.’ theaters, concert halls, arts centers, etc. Representatives David Obey (D-WI), Louise Slaughter (D-NY), Norman Dicks (D-WA) and Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) deserve special credit for keeping the arts funding from being stripped from the stimulus bill.
